When I received the beans, delicately wrapped in beautiful golden paper, I found that they were enclosed in a glass tube, protecting them from the elements. I felt like I had received a gift! It took me a while to decide what I wanted to make, what would really showcase the wonderful vanilla flavor. ICE CREAM!
Rodelle has been making high quality vanilla products since 1936, so they know what they're doing! Before I could begin, I had to do a little research on how to accurately extract the beans from the pod. Naturally, they had a video for my learning pleasure, not sure that I've mastered it quite yet, but I'm working on it!
Here's a simple and easy recipe for billowy, soft, vanilla bean ice cream:
Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
1 cup of brown sugar
2 beaten eggs
1 cup of half and half
3/4 cups of heavy cream
Seeds from a whole vanilla bean pod
In a medium sauce pan mix together sugar, eggs, and half and half. Simmer for two minutes or more. Remove from heat.
Strain the mixture to get any clumps out. Pour into a bowl. Mix in heavy cream and the vanilla beans.
Pour into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the machine's instructions.
When the ice cream is done, it should have a smooth, creamy consistency, and a taste that could only have been created in heaven!
You can buy Rodelle products in the store or direct from their website. Follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook for cool recipe ideas.

Stacey,
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have even wanted to open that beautiful vanilla bean pkg! My hubby & son love to make ice cream so I printed out your recipe. I'm going to ask THEM to make it. You have a great site here!

Awesome! I've never used a real vanilla bean before -- I'm the kind that gets the vanilla in a teeny, tiny jar. :-) But, you make it look so easy, I'm going to have to check it out! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from VB today. Hope it is a wonderful day!!

Oh yum!!! I LOVE Madagascar Vanilla (although I usually buy the extract... I've never quite been brave enough to tackle the whole bean!), and I also have an ice cream maker that I LOVE!!! I've been looking for the ideal ice cream recipe for a while--last summer I was on this "low-fat" kick, and I kept trying to make "light" ice cream, but it just never had the right texture (I mean, really, what is fat-free heavy cream really made of anyway? LOL)
ReplyDeleteSo this time around I'm going full-tilt. I'm going to try it with the eggs (another ingredient I shied away from using for fear they'd scramble in the pot), and with the high-fat stuff, and I'm sure it will be GLORIOUS. Thanks for sharing!

I just love this post! I'm an avid vanilla bean user and adore the flavor of the fresh bean and the texture of the little seeds. I even use the pods after I remove the seeds to flavor liquids for baking etc. Thank you for sharing the "how to's" of vanilla beans and spreading the word about this wonderful little flavor maker!

I've always been scared of real vanilla beans, sure I'd mess it up. I'll have to try though!
