When my friend Marie invited me to the final dress rehearsal for Albert Herring last Wednesday night I was thrilled. I hadn't been to the opera in many years and my sister and daughter had never seen an opera live. Plus any any occasion to visit the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion is welcome.
I had never even heard of Albert Herring, so I didn't know what to expect, but as always, I was pleasantly surprised. Albert Herring is a comedy (a rather funny one I might add).
The story takes place in Loxford (a little town in East Suffolk) and revolves around the revival of the local May Day Festival. Lady Billows has decided to "make virtue attractive," by finding a virgin village girl to crown "May Day Queen." Trouble is they can't find one chaste girl in the entire village, so they decide to make Albert Herring the "May Day King" instead, since he fits the criteria. Albert is none to happy about the nomination, but his mother is thrilled to death and insists that he accept the honor.
Albert runs the family shop and is always annoyed when Sid and Nancy stop by because they flirt ridiculously. When the pair hears about Albert's coronation, they decide to play a prank on him by spiking his lemonade at the repast. Albert's inebriation leads him to a walk on the "wild side," throwing the town into a frenzy.
Albert Herring is a cute fun-filled opera. I enjoyed it very, very much. Perfectly cast, each player had a phenomenal voice. I sat completely in awe of the range and execution of each line.

I have never been to an opera before! that looks like so much fun! Congrats on being able to attend. I eventually want to attend an opera just so I can say I've been. lol

Lolo my friend was not actually in the production, she is the studio teacher. I love everything about the arts too (even though I'm not very artistic! LOL)
