The Finest Hours - In theaters today!

I was invited to a free screening of The Finest Hours.
Images provided by Disney.
All views expressed are the honest opinion of Just Say I Told You So.

The power of the human spirit never ceases to amaze. I attended a screening of Disney's latest film, The Finest Hours, the other night. And to say I was blown away... is a serious understatement.

About the film

On February 18, 1952, a massive storm (a nor'easter) struck New England. This storm was so powerful that it nearly destroyed the eastern seaboard, tearing two 500-foot oil tankers in half, leaving the crews in the middle of nowhere facing nearly impossible odds.

The crew aboard the stern half of one of the tankers, the Pendleton, under the reluctant leadership of chief engineer, Raymond Sybert, the crew uses their dwindling resources to stay afloat. In the meantime, the U.S. Coast Guard in Chatham, Massachusetts, sends a small but courageous crew, in a wooden lifeboat, on a life or death mission to save the day.

Starring:

Bernie Weber ...................  Chris Pine
Raymond Sybert ...............  Casey Affleck
Miriam Webber ................. Holliday Grainger
Richard Livesey ................  Ben Foster
Daniel Cluff ......................  Eric Bana

My Thoughts

This is one Action Thriller that stressed me OUT! In a good way. I mean I was on the edge of my seat for a good part of this outstanding movie. The fact that it was based on a true story made it even worse! The Finest Hours is very well made. And the cast is excellent.

The entire audience was enthralled for the duration of the movie. Aside from the occasional gasp, I am not sure that I heard anyone speak a single word. It was that captivating!

If you are looking for a movie of substance, something you can really get caught up in, I highly recommend this movie. It's got action, love, and passion too! It will renew your belief in the hunan spirit and remind you that we really are in this together.

Disney-Pixar's Inside Out - In theaters TODAY

I attended a free screening of Disney-Pixar's Inside Out.
All views expressed are the honest opinion of Just Say I Told You So.

I am an inspiration junkie. I love anything that lifts my spirits and tickles my heart. I had the pleasure of viewing Disney-Pixar's Inside Out a couple of weeks ago... and I'm still riding the inspiration high!

About the film

The control center of 11-year old Riley's mind is run by five (5) emotions.  The leader of the pack is Joy, the optimist of the bunch, her job is to make sure that Riley is happy, and she takes her job very seriously. Fear is in charge of safety, Anger stays on top of fairness, and Disgust does whatever she needs to do to make sure that Riley is not poisoned.  Sadness feels like the odd man out, because she really has no idea what her role is... and the others do not really know either.

Starring:

Joy .................................... Amy Poehler
Sadness .......................... Phyllis Smith
Fear ................................. Bill Hader
Anger .............................. Lewis Black
Disgust ........................... Mindy Kaling
Riley ..............................  Kaitlyn Dias
Mom ............................... Diane Lane
Dad ................................. Kyle Maclachlan

My thoughts

As a grown-up, I know how difficult it is to maneuver the world of my own emotions on a daily basis... and it was even worse when I was 11 years old! Inside Out offers a refreshing and clear perspective of how emotions work.

I think what I liked best about the film was the way encourage the audience to recognize that all emotions are important, none more than the other. And that emotions are fluid, we can flow in and out of them at any given moment.

What more can I say... this is a smart movie that the entire family will love. The characters are lovable. Their adventures will tickle your funny bone and pull at your heart strings. You will not just relate to one part of the movie, you'll relate to the every single moment. Definitely a must see film!

Disney's McFarland USA - in theaters today!

I'm all about inspiration. That's the way I live my life. That's the way I choose to show up in the world. And I can honestly say that I am inspired by something or someone every single day... in fact I am a self-described inspiration junkie (and proud of it).

I got my latest (as in two-days ago) inspiration fix through Disney's McFarland USA

About the film

McFarland USA is based on the true story of a group of high school kids who witness their extraordinary strengths when they join a cross-country team, organized by a coach who has no cross-country experience.

These kids were born and raised in the predominantly Latin community of McFarland, California. They each come from hard-working, farm families. Even though they are in high school, most of these kids already knew what it was like to go to work before dawn, while still attending school.

Through running they manage to form a bond amongst themselves and with their coach, Jim White, all while uniting + inspiring the entire community.

Starring:

Jim White............................. Kevin Costner
Danny Diaz.......................... Ramiro Rodriguez
Thomas Valles..................... Carlos Pratts
Jose Cardenas...................... Johnny Ortiz
David Diaz.......................... Rafael Martinez
Victor Puentes....................  Sergio Avelar
Johnny Sameniego.............. Hector Duran
Damacio Diaz...................... Michael Aguero

My thoughts

I cried through a good portion of the film. I was touched by the determination every kid embodied. I was moved by their willingness to venture into the unknown, while facing adversity in and out of their community. And Coach White was just as inspiring as they were. He too pressed on against the odds. He believed in each one of those kids. He was willing to push them harder because he could see what they were capable of, even when they couldn't.

McFarland USA is a story of perseverance and courage. It inspired me to rethink what I believe is possible. I am currently training for a 5k and now I'm more determined than ever, because I know I can... because they did.

Here's one of my favorite scenes:

Big Hero 6 is in theaters now... And it's awesome!

I was invited to an advanced screening of this film.
All views expressed are the honest opinion of Just Say I Told You So.

Big Hero 6 is Disney's latest animated feature film. The story is an action-comedy-adventure about Hiro a teenage robotic genius who develops an unlikely bond with a marshmallowy inflatable robot designed by his brother.

I had the pleasure of screening the movie earlier this week... and I totally ❤︎'d it! So much so that a review could not do it justice. I implore you to go see it for yourself!

But I will offer this snippet to prep you:

Big Hero 6 is in theaters N-O-W!

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, #VeryBadDay review

This is not a paid post. I was invited to free screening of this movie by Disney.
All views expressed are the honest opinion of Just Say I Told You So.

I checked out Disney's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day early last week and I have to tell you that I thought it was pretty funny!

About the movie

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is the story of 11 year old Alexander who has a day that was terrible from the moment he awakened with gum in his hair and it never got better. Every one else in his family seems to experience great days, every day, so they don't exactly sympathize with him. But on Alexander's birthday the tables turn in his favor, he's having the best day ever while everyone else experiences a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!

Review

This movie was LOL funny! There were several scenes that had the entire theater in stitches! At the same time the storyline was pretty darn good, it warmed the cockles of my heart.

We all experience bad days, sometimes several in a row. It often feels like it only happens to us, which isn't true, so it's always nice to remember that the fickle finger of fate does not discriminate. Even more than that, it's nice to be reminded that bad times don't last, and being able to laugh in the face of adversity makes it bearable.

This is a movie for all ages. Be sure to put it on your TBS (to be seen) list. Bring the kids along... and the adults too!

The 100 Foot Journey - Movie Review

DreamWorks The 100 Foot Journey is probably the only movie this year that I absolutely could not wait to see. I mean there were others that I was excited about seeing, but I was giddy with anticipation for this one....  I had the pleasure of screening the movie a couple of days ago and it was even more than I thought it would be!

About the movie

The 100 Foot Journey is the story of the Kadam family who moves to France in the wake of tragedy.  They settle into a small French village by chance and decide to open an Indian restaurant. Trouble is the location of their new restaurant is 100 feet away from Le Saule Pleureur, which is run by Madam Mallory (Helen Mirren) who is anything but pleasant. When Hassan Kadam (son + cook) develops an interest in French cuisine the divide between the two cultures is suddenly not as vast as it once seemed.

Review

This movie made my heart immensely happy! Feel good is not strong enough to describe how it felt. I laughed and cried (a little bit), I imagined food combinations and spices, and my eyes feasted on all sorts of culinary delights.

What moved me the most was the connection between people and food. I have always felt that love makes any dish taste better. I strongly believe that our energy, emotion, and intention gets infused into every dish, and this movie captured that perfectly.

Life is intended to be experienced together and food builds a connection from the heart of one to the heart (and stomach) of another.

If you are interested in being moved and cajoled into hunger, I highly recommend you check out The 100 Foot Journey today!

Maleficent - in theaters now!

We've all been eagerly awaiting the release of Disney's Maleficent for what seems like forever! Well the wait is finally over... Maleficent is in theaters today!

I had the great privilege of attending an advance screening of Maleficent earlier this week... can you say brilliant? I believe that this is my favorite movie of 2014 (so far).

Angelina was made for this role. I cannot imagine anybody else playing Disney's "most iconic villain."

If you thought Maleficent was just Sleeping Beauty from an alternate perspective, you were wrong... it's much deeper than that. This is the untold story of the events that led Maleficent's to place the irrevocable curse on Aurora.

Maleficent is much more than you could ever imagine. If you don't do anything else this weekend CHECK OUT THIS FLICK!

In the meantime, here are some activity sheets for the kiddos. Enjoy!

Mom's Night Out - Movie Review

I had the great honor of attending a screening for Mom's Night Out recently.... what an adventure!

About the movie:

Allyson (Sarah Drew) loves her children and her husband dearly, but she needs a break. So she gets together with two of her friends for a grown-up girl night on the town - a Mom's Night Out.  Of course everything that could go wrong does... and so much more!

Staring:
  • Sarah Drew
  • Sean Astin
  • Patricia Heaton
  • Trace Adkins
  • And many more...

Review

I thought the movie had a really good message. Being a mom is truly the hardest job I've ever loved.... and I only have one kid! One of the things that makes it so difficult is the idea that the only way to do it well is to "do it all," which is totally not true. The movie does a great job of tearing down the perfection myth. It paints a picture of what home life is like for a lot of mothers. It is more than a notion to keep the kids clean, the house tidy, cook meals, do homework, entertain, be a good wife, and keep your sanity all at the same time.

I would have liked for the movie to have also demonstrated what it's like for mother's who work outside of the home, while juggling home life as well, because I think that is a true reality for a great portion of society as well. That was certainly a reality for me.

I also liked that the movie showed that men really do try their very best and that it's hard to step in a mom's shoes too. And those are big shoes to fill!

Mom's Night Out is a funny, heartwarming, and overall entertaining film. And men will enjoy it too!

Mom's Night Out hits theaters on May 9th <--- Mother's Day Weekend.  Gather your girlfriends and make a mom's night of it... you won't be sorry!

One Direction - "This is Us" review

I few weeks ago I was invited to attend a screening for This is Us, the film about One Direction. You'll probably be surprised when I tell you that I'd never heard of this group before.

Obviously I have been living in a bubble, unbeknownst to me, for the past year or so. The good news is, because I hadn't heard any of their music or read any news about the group, I was able to watch the movie from a completely objective perspective. I am happy to report that I really enjoyed it, a lot!

What touched me the most was the sincerity of these kids guys. They each come from different backgrounds, yet they are all strongly connected to their family and to each other.

While fame has been seemingly instantaneous for them, they still have their feet firmly planted on the ground. They have not forgotten that the journey is the most important part and their enjoying every single minute of it. The bond that they have forged with one another is amazing!

I think the most incredible part about their story is that they are literally a product of their fans. They could not have gained this level of fame, in this short period of time, without their dedicated fan base, I've never seen anything like it.

If you don't have plans to see this movie, go see it! Even if you're not a fan of boy bands, or concert movies, it's more than that. "This is Us" is not just a concert movie, it's an up close and personal glimpse at hope realized.  Check it out!

Oz the Great and Powerful - in theaters now!

Did you ever wonder how the wizard got to Oz in the first place? I honestly hadn't given it much thought, before now. I was invited to a screening of Oz The Great and Powerful earlier this week and now I know!

I don't want to ruin it for you, so I won't tell you all the deets. But what I will say is this, I was amazed, amused, and awed. Not only is the story line great, the actors are superb, the imagery is flawless, and there is just enough comedy, drama, and a touch of romance.

The cast:

Oscar "Oz" Diggs - James Franco
Annie / Glinda the Good Witch - Michelle Williams
Evanora - Rachel Weisz
Theodora - Mila Kunis
Frank / Finley - Zach Braff
Young Girl / China Girl - Joey King

You will enjoy this movie. It doesn't matter if you believe in fairy tales or not, the adventures and lessons of this film are universal and they apply to real life too!

WRECK-IT RALPH - review & giveaway

I've never been very good at video games. As a child, my older sister would beat me mercilessly in everything from Donkey Kong to Mario Bros. No matter how hard I tried, I just wasn't good at it, but I guess losing taught me how to be a good sport (which is the sort of things that losers say I guess! LOL).

Walt Disney Animation has brought video games to life in WRECK-IT RALPH, which opened in theaters yesterday!

WRECK-IT RALPH is story of Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) has been the "bad guy" in his video game for decades, always overshadowed by Fix-it-Felix (voiced by Jack McBrayer), but now he's fed up, Ralph wants to be the good guy for once. When he ventures out of his own game on a quest to prove that he has what it takes to be a hero, he encounters meets some interesting characters and goes up against an enemy who threatens to destroy the entire arcade. Will Ralph finally save the day or will he ruin it for everyone?

This is one of the most enjoyable films I've seen all year. I left the theater feeling like I wanted to see it again and that I can't wait to add it to my home video collection, it's that good! Take your kids out to see it this weekend, if you don't have kids take yourself!

Disney/Pixar's Brave - in theaters 6/22!

No matter where your family is from, there are certain traditions that have stood the test of time. Sometimes it's hard for the next generation to come to terms with these familial expectations that have been passed down from generation to generation. Young Princess Merida tests the boundaries of tradition in Disney-Pixar's new film, Brave.

I had the pleasure of screening Brave in 3D last night and I must say it's pretty incredible! Set in the Highlands of Scotland, Brave chronicles what happens when old traditions and the autonomy of youth collide, but it also demonstrates the transformative power of love. Brave is a film about family, plain and simple.

The animation alone took my breath away. Merida's flowing red locks were so life-like that I wanted to touch them!

But what struck me the most about this story was how much I could relate to it.  Merida colors outside the lines.  She is feisty and rambunctious.  She's the type of girl who knows what she wants and goes after it.  She goes against the grain, not as an act of defiance against her parents (mostly her mother), but to flex her independence. As the mother of a teenager, I know how hard it can be to accept that children do not always do what you want them to do. When my daughter was born, I had a million and one grandiose ideas about her life, but now that she's nearly 17, I have had to acknowledge that her journey is not mine (insert crocodile tears here).

Brave will have you laughing out loud, but it will pull at your heartstrings too!

Brave hits theaters on Friday 6/22/12!

Movie Review: Mighty Fine

One of the things that we learn as parents is that our parents are real people too. Real people make mistakes, they get it wrong, and they mess things up, all the time - but we love them anyway. Love makes us vulnerable. When you love someone all your soft spots are exposed, making yourself susceptible to experiencing joy and pain (sometimes at the same time). Loving someone does not mean that your feelings will never be hurt or that you will like the other person all the time.  It doesn't matter if its your mother, father, sister, brother, or child - love means saying your sorry (a lot). If this is a possibility in a healthy family unit, imagine what it must be like to have a father who could go from calm to enraged within seconds. That's what it's like to be a member of the Fine family.

When Joe Fine (Chazz Palminteri) moved his family from Brooklyn to New Orleans, he had big things planned.  They would live in an amazing house, have incredible adventures, and love one another - like a fine family should. What Joe didn't recognize was that his anger control issues were a problem; a problem that would destroy his family, his life, and his dreams.

Mighty Fine is a heartwrenching movie. When the film began their lives appeared normal, there were a few red flag moments, but nothing major. See Joe Fine didn't just want to be a good husband and father, he wanted to be the best. He wanted to give his wife (Andie MacDowell) and daughters (Jodelle Ferland and Rainey Qualley) the finest things that life had to offer, but the one thing he couldn't do was protect them from himself.

Mighty Fine gives mental illness a new face. Mental illness does not just affect the life of the afflicted, but it can impair the lives of entire families, friends, co-workers, and whole communities. In Joe's case, his mental illness looked like abuse and that's exactly what it felt like to his family. Most of the time abusers suffer from mental illness, which often goes unrecognized and untreated.

The writer/director of the film, Debbie Goodstein drew from her own childhood experiences with her own father who had issues with anger. She recognizes that part of what fueled Joe Fine was the time period in which he existed (70's), " Joe Fine is the king of his castle, like so many men of the seventies."

The actors are amazing. Chazz Palminteri is incredibly believable. We were able to chat with him after the screening and I was surprised to hear that he did not draw from any personal experience for this role, in fact he said he had a great childhood. Like many women in abusive situations, Andie MacDowell's character was obviously conflicted, torn between loving her husband and protecting her children. The eldest daughter, Maddie (Rainey Qualley) recognized her father's behavior for what it was and she was brave enough to speak up about it. While the youngest daughter, Natalie (Jodelle Ferland), quietly observes as her family unit crumbles all around her.

While the subject matter of this movie is heavy, I still found it entertaining. I think it's important to bring awareness to mental illness and abuse. So many times people suffer in silence, feeling as if there is nobody else going through what they're going through. It is my hope that Mighty Fine will help others to find their voice.

Here's a trailer for your viewing pleasure:

Movie Review: Disneynature's Chimpanzee

There is something that I've always found so fascinating about primates. Perhaps it's because they always look so very thoughtful when I stare into their eyes or the way they interact with one another.

I was invited to a screening of DisneyNature's new film, Chimpanzee, at the El Capitan theater on Sunday. The film takes place in the forests of Africa and follows the life of Oscar, an adorable baby chimpanzee.  Just like human babies, Oscar is completely dependent on his mother, Isha, to take care of him. Isha is very nurturing, she takes excellent care of Oscar, making sure that he is well fed and clean. Even when she's tired and he still wants to play, she remained patient.

When a rival band of chimpanzees, with the appropriately named leader "Scar," strikes their turf; little Oscar is left all alone. Unable to convince the other females to take him in, poor little Oscar tries his very best to take care of himself, but he just isn't old enough yet. When it seemed that all hope was lost, Oscar is "adopted" by a very unlikely chimp.

Narrated by none other than Tim Allen, Chimpanzee is an extraordinary movie.  The lush landscape is breathtaking, but the film also demonstrates the bond between mother and child, the importance of family, and also sends  a powerful message about resilience.

My 7-year old nephew, "Beans," really enjoyed the film and so did I. I encourage you to make a date with your family on Earth Day...go see this film!

Disney's John Carter

I was invited to a press screening of John Carter at the Disney Studios in Burbank, CA, last Thursday. At the time, I had only seen one preview of the movie, a ton of billboards (that didn't give me a clue as to what the film was about),  and hadn't really talked about the film with anyone. I said all that to say that I went into the film with a completely open mind.

John Carter is based on "A Princess of Mars," the classic first novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs (writer and creator of Tarzan).  Disney classifies the film as action-adventure, but after seeing it for myself I would call it an action-adventure-sci fi-with a touch of romance-masterpiece!

The film follows the adventures of John Carter, a former military captain, who inadvertently discovers the cave of gold he had been searching for, while in the midst of battle with Indians. When he happens upon a man inside the cave he is suddenly transported to the deserts of Barsoom (that's Mars to you Earthlings).  It isn't long before John Carter finds himself in the middle of an age-old war, speaking the language of the native inhabitants, and beguiling a Princess.

I enjoyed this film soooo much! As I said before, I knew nothing about it to begin with, so having no expectations at all, I still found myself completely enthralled in the story. Did I mention that I saw it in 3D? Let me begin by saying that I am not a fan of three-dimensional films at all, but the film was so well made that I was able to enjoy it in all three dimensions!  The action was incredible and the storyline was superb.

The film was directed by Academy Award®–winning director/writer Andrew Stanton, who has been a fan of the "Barsoom" series since he was a child. The cast is stellar (of course):

John Carter - Taylor Kitsch
Tars Turkas - Willem Dafoe
Princess Dejah Thoris - Lynn Collins
Sola - Samantha Morton
Tal Hajus - Thomas Haden Church

Also starring: Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Bryan Cranston, Polly Walker, and Daryl Sabara.

First Look: Disney's Lone Ranger

If you haven't already heard, the Lone Ranger is riding back into town in May 2013.  Guess who will be playing Tonto???  None other than Captain Jack himself - Johnny Depp!!

Jerry Bruckheimer is the producer and it's being directed by Gore Verbinski. Who's playing the masked crusader you ask? John Reid will be played by Armie Hammer (you remember him from Social Network, if not you can catch him on the silver screen next week in Mirror Mirror).

So what do you think, can Armie and Johnny pull it off? If you're like me, you'll love Johnny Depp in almost anything. If he just sat and stared at the camera for 90 minutes that would probably be enough for this girl! LOL

Stay tuned, we're sure to hear more about this flick!

Movie Review: Safe House

Safe House
Rating: R
Directed by: Daniel Espinosa
Starring:
  Denzel Washington
  Ryan Reynolds
  Vera Farmiga
  Brendan Gleeson
  Sam Shepard
  Ruben Blades

IMDB Summary:

Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) is a CIA rookie who is manning a safe house in Cape Town, South Africa, when Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) the CIA's most wanted rogue agent is captured and taken to the safe house. During Frost's interrogation, the safe house is overtaken by mercenaries who want Frost. Weston and Frost escape and must stay out of the gunman's sight until they can get to another safe house.

Here's what I think:

Of course nearly every movie that Denzel Washington has ever starred in has been deemed great, Safe House is no exception. I think the casting was brilliant! Denzel Washington plays an intelligent, intimidating, and dangerous ex-spy turned traitor. While Ryan Reynolds plays the new guy, desperate to get his feet wet.  We all know timing is everything, so naturally the universe throws the two of them together for a life-altering adventure.

I was on the edge of my seat so often during this movie that I scrapped the idea of sitting back altogether. The action - great. The story - excellent. If you are looking for a movie that will keep you interested for 115 minutes straight, Safe House is a safe bet.

Movie Review: Man on a Ledge

Man on a Ledge

Directed by:  Asger Leth
Starring:
  Sam Worthington
  Ed Harris
  Elizabeth Banks
  Edward Burns
  Anthony Mackie
  Jamie Bell

IMDB Summary:
An ex-cop turned con threatens to jump to his death from a Manhattan hotel rooftop. The nearest New York Police officer immediately responds to a screaming woman and calls dispatch. More Officers arrive with SWAT and tactical command along with fire-fighters. The police then dispatches a female police psychologist personally requested to talk him down from the ledge. However, things aren't as straightforward and clearcut as they appear to be.

Here's what I think:

So Nick (Sam Worthington) is an escaped convict, who checks into a hotel, eats his last supper, then posts himself on the hotel ledge (many stories up). He quickly gets the attention of the nosey Manhattan crowd gathering below, a negotiator (Elizabeth Banks), and the SWAT team. As it turns out, Nick was serving time for stealing a $40M diamond from real estate mogul, David Englander (Ed Harris). The plot thickens, rather quickly, but I won't give it away.

The story grabbed me from the very beginning. While Sam Worthington is on the ledge for the majority of this flick, there is plenty of nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, action. I must admit I found myself stressed out, several times during the 102 minute stretch. Is it the best movie I have ever seen? No. But do I think it's worth seeing? Absolutely!

Crazy Stupid Love - Movie Review

Crazy Stupid Love
Directed by: Glenn Ficarra & John Requa
Starring:
        Steve Carell
        Julianne Moore
        Ryan Gosling
        Emma Stone
        Analeigh Tipton

IMDB Summary:

Cal (Steve Carell) and Emily (Julianne Moore) have the perfect life together living the American dream... until Emily asks for a divorce. Now Cal, Mr Husband, has to navigate the single scene with a little help from his professional bachelor friend Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Make that a lot of help...

Here's what I think:

Crazy Stupid Love is one of the most honest movies I've seen in a long time. Love is messy business and it hurts sometimes. Steve Carell's character, Cal Weaver, is wounded when his wife (Julianne Moore) decides she wants a divorce.  It took him completely by surprise, he really didn't see it coming. When his pity-party strikes interest of ladies man, Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), he not only becomes a new man, but he gets much more than he bargained for.

The way that the movie is presented is so real, the emotion is raw and completely believable.  There are plenty of funny moments and just the right amount of seriousness. Each character goes through an evolution, because divorce and separation effects every family member, friends, and neighbors.  It was fascinating to watch the characters discover parts of themselves that they didn't know existed.

This is a movie is a must see!
